Arcadia, a city in Los Angeles County, California, lies 13 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. It’s nestled in the San Gabriel Valley, with the San Gabriel Mountains at its base. The property, known as Rancho Huerta de Cuati, changed hands over the years. In 1873, James DeBarth Shorb, son-in-law of Don Benito Wilson, named it “San Marino” after his Maryland plantation, which, in turn, was named after the Republic of San Marino in Europe.

The city lies between the San Gabriel Mountains and the Angeles National Forest to the north, with the San Rafael Hills to the south. While most of the city’s drainage flows southeastward toward the Arroyo Seco area in Pasadena, the western portion (generally west of Alta Canyada Road) drains southward via Verdugo Canyon, eventually joining the Los Angeles River north of downtown Los Angeles.
